Worthwhile winter hiking trails around Mittersill

  • Winter Hike to Resterhöhe: This 2.28-kilometer, approximately one-hour walk starts at the middle station of the Panoramabahn Kitzbüheler Alpen, which you can reach in ten minutes by car. From there, take the gondola up and walk to the right of the conveyor belt. The groomed winter trail, marked in blue, begins here. It takes you in a large loop through the beautiful landscape of the Resterhöhe ski area and back to the mountain station. Enjoy lovely views of the Kitzbüheler Alpen ski area and the Hohe Tauern National Park along the way.
  • Winter Hike Through Wasenmoos: This 5.28-kilometer, approximately 1.5-hour hike starts at the parking lot of the Gasthaus Brennsteiner on Pass-Thurn-Straße. It’s just a 10-minute drive from this starting point. The trail leads into Wasenmoos, a protected moorland offering unparalleled panoramic views of the snowy Hohe Tauern. From the parking lot, take the small gravel path uphill to the Hochmoorstüberl. Continue past the building and at the next fork, turn left and follow the field path straight ahead until you reach the Hochmoorloipe. Follow this path to an observation platform and cross the trail. Continue along the Wasenmoosweg, keeping left at subsequent junctions until you return to the observation tower. From there, retrace your steps back to the Hochmoorstüberl.
  • Winter Hike to Stuhlfelden: This seven-kilometer, approximately two-hour tour begins right at the hotel. Start by passing the Felberkirche, then after about 100 meters, turn left into the meadow. Follow the narrow footpath along the Salzach River to the “Golf e gusto” restaurant (closed in winter) at the Hohe Tauern golf course, one of the most beautiful golf courses in Pinzgau. Cross the golf course on the right side and continue along the asphalt road toward Stuhlfelden until you reach a playground. Turn left at the intersection and follow the road, crossing a bridge. Shortly after, turn left again and follow a small path back to the Salzach River, which will guide you back to Mittersill.

Guided hikes

Our Parent Activity Week Program also includes guided winter hikes specifically for adults. Additionally, the rangers of the Hohe Tauern National Park offer such experiences. While your little ones are cared for by our dedicated team, you can set off on new adventures – diving deep into Salzburg's nature, learning to identify animal tracks, or discovering more about life in the mountains. A visit to a hut is a must afterward: Enjoy a warm “Jagatee” (hunting tea) and a hearty snack, allowing plenty of time for more conversation – perhaps you'll hear some amusing anecdotes from the Hohe Tauern region.
